Witch doctors, voodoo, and curses - thing only believed in by cults and ancient cultures, right? According to CBN, Haiti is cursed by the devil and voodoo. This curse has been causing all the poverty in civil wars in the country.
Chavannes Jeune, a pastor at one of the largest Evangelical churches in Haiti, said that Haiti had been cursed hundreds of years ago:
“…because our forefathers, when they were celebrating their independence, dedicated Haiti to a voodoo spirit.
A voodoo priest concurs:
“Voodoo and the spirits on these walls have more power than the God of the Gospels, and all this power is now in me, and I can give that power to those who want it!
The CBN reporter asked the priest how much it cost for a good spirit (to cleanse an evil one).
To buy a good spirit will cost you five, eight, maybe 25,000 Haitian dollars. It all depends on how powerful a spirit you want. Now, if you want to take a spirit with you home to America, you have to pay in American dollars!
Paying for salvation, sounds like they’ve taken lessons from the Catholics.
But the Church is fighting back against the spirits of evil. What CBN calls “an army of believers” is trying to reclaim Haiti for Jesus. After former “President” Jean-Bertrand Aristide began to recognized voodoo as an official religion, religious conservatives in Haiti began organizing. They thought that Christianity should be the only officially recognized religion; I guess there are Jerry Falwells in Haiti, too.
Who was Haiti gonna call? Not Ghostbusters, they need the heavy forces: the Promise Keepers. The Promise Keepers are a ultra-right male-only Christian group, like the Boy Scouts for old people. At a pro-Christian, anti-voodoo rally in the country a pastor declared, “his is the blood of Christ, and we lift it up tonight.” If only he knew that the blood drinking in Christianity is inspired by voodoo-esque pagan traditions.
The final result of this will probably be like the Exorcist, just with international politics. Only Donald Rumsfeld will be tossed down a flight of stairs to his death. Not that I wish Donnie any harm.
We wish the Promise Keepers and the conservative Christians in Haiti luck in their mission to exorcise the country, though when they’re done, Haiti will just be another giant trailer park.
