Tales of Cubans fleeing the island for Florida are common these days. Stories about people trying to break into Cuba, however, are few and far between. Yet that’s exactly what Mel Dressler did when he found himself on the losing side of a custody battle with his ex-wife. Without even telling his kids and his current wife about his plans, Dressler sailed his 13- and 9-year-old daughters and his 11-year-old son on a catamaran to the Communist nation, where he hoped to press his case in an international tribunal. No dice: US authorities negotiated the return of the children this past weekend. Dressler is planning to sail back to the States and submit to an arrest warrant.
Why did this dad feel pushed to such an extreme action? The article is very circumspect, speaking of Dressler in sympathetic terms without supplying any facts. Still, Dressler doesn’t come off as a militant father’s rights spokesman, but as an ordinary joe who truly believes he was at the end of his rope. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this case in the months to come.
